Bridge Inspection and Rehabilitation Alternatives

Project Type:  Bridge Inspection

Location: Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States

PROJECT SUMMARY

EK Engineering inspected a private bridge in Gwinnett County, Georgia, which was closed due to severe erosion at both abutments. The inspection revealed significant structural deficiencies, including deteriorated abutments, inadequate railings, and a clogged drainage system that worsened erosion. The existing structure consisted of steel beams and channel decking, spanning 50 feet with no concrete abutments. The stream beneath the bridge exhibited noticeable bank erosion, though no history of flooding or roadway overtopping was reported.

To restore access, EK Engineering evaluated three alternatives: rehabilitating the existing bridge by reinforcing structural components and stabilizing the stream banks, replacing the bridge with a Corrugated Steel Metal Arch, or constructing a Three-sided Flat-top or reinforced concrete box culvert. The most suitable option will be determined based on the geotechnical report, environmental permitting requirements for construction within a U.S. waterway, and compliance with Gwinnett County and GDOT policies. EK Engineering recommended keeping the bridge closed until construction is complete.
